It's just a couple of weeks before I leave. I'm a little nervous given all the unrest in both Nairobi and Mt. Elgon. It never ceases to amaze me when my Kenyan friends tell me it's safe where they are and then I read of all the beheadings, car jackings and other sorts of crime in the neighborhood
I must say the political situation is something out of the Keystone Cops. No one seems to be running on any platform. There are tons of parties over there and one switches as often as a guy holding the remote. It looks like chaos to me and I'm somewhat sanguine that anything is going to change in December. Reminds me of the old days in Cook County when really anything was ok as long as Daly got out the vote.
I'm going to try and teach business development to some of the leaders in the community. I think they are going to be surprised at what I know about what is going on in Kenya. Since they have no access to internet the idea of the Muzungu reading both their papers every morning should be an interesting site to behold.
I am looking forward to welcoming in a new school. The challenge will be in getting folks to think about plans for the future. There's a bumper crop this year so we should be able to double the number of kids we are feeding for not much of an increase in the budget. I wonder if they will mention that.
I must admit I am looking forward to seeing my friends and seeing the children. Despite how grueling the flight is, it's always good to get back to Africa. It will always own a piece of my hear. 25 July 2007
